Hampshire........ive walked the walls 5 mtrs high in some places........ive also been in the amphitheatre.....awesome place.....gives you a feeling of the scale of the roman occupancy.......bearing in mind the place has had 2000 years of neglect its still breathtaking......it is about a 15 min drive from where i live.

Re: The Big Pointless Thread
Got a similar thing in Cirencester, not far from me. I love looking round old ruins like that.
Re: The Big Pointless Thread
yeah i also got alot of time for history,i didnt know this till recently but most roman towns in the uk were built on tribal capitals.......spose that was their way of letting the locals know they were well and truly conquered.
Avebury is another cool place to have a lookesee....some of the stones there are much bigger than those at stonehenge.....and a plus about avebury is some idiot built a village in the middle of it way back.....so when youve had a good look round you can go to the pub there and get ratted.....not that ive done that

Re: The Big Pointless Thread
if you think about it if an object is big enough we can see it no matter how far away it is,think about planets and shit,we can see the moon and thats thousands of miles away, and we can see stars and shit that aint even there anymore we can see the bang that fucked them off millions of years ago but is so far away the light is still travelling to us.fuck knows how far the sun is away but we see that everyday innit......sorry if i was being too technological and shit.

Re: The Big Pointless Thread
The moon isn't thousands of miles away from the earth. It's Hundreds of thousands of miles!! Roughly about 240,000miles (400,000km) is the average distance between The Earth & The Moon but this depends on where it is in it's orbit at the time of measurement. At it's closest it's about 225,000miles (363,000km) and at it's farthest it's about 252,000miles (405,000km). As I'm sure most know, this variation in distance plays a part in controlling the tides here on Earth. Interesting fact about the moon: It's moving away from us at a rate of about 1 inch per year & will eventually leave Earth's gravitational influence (orbit) & be flung out into space! It's also thought that the Moon may once have been a part of Earth but rebelled
The Sun is a little bit further away Roughly 93,000,000 Miles (150,000,000km). It takes light around 8 minutes to make the 93million mile trip to earth. Like most Stars, the Sun will eventually become a "Red Giant" and may well swallow the earth in the process. Don't panic though, this isn’t due to happen for a good few billion years yet! It'll be great BBQ weather though

Re: The Big Pointless Thread
That's a good point actually, so there must be a formula to determine how far an object is from us for it to become too small to see. Anyone know it?
Re: The Big Pointless Thread
I don't think there's a formula to it. I think it's a case of how much light it's capable of reflecting & how far it can reflect that light rather than it's size.....
I could be wrong though.....

buggered if i know LP but i reckon you already knew it wouldnt be me that comes up with the equation shit yeah.
mrT i knew about the moon being part of the earth i saw it on a doccy not so long back, just imagine the size the earth would of been if we was still conjoined and stuff, plenty of room for everyone.

Re: The Big Pointless Thread
Surely the size must play a part in the equation, the light reflects better off some surfaces than others but lets say we're talking about an A4 sheet of paper, there must be a point where it is impossible to see and therefore there must be a formula to decide that
If there isn't then I'm bloody well going to write it anyway

Re: The Big Pointless Thread
Nah, if I remember correctly size plays no part in the equation. It's a case of light. Our eyes detect the light of an object which is what allows us to see the object. No matter the size, if an object reflects zero light you will be unable to see it even if it's massive & right in front of your face. However, if an object is bright enough you'll be able to see it no matter what size it is or how far away it is. You just need to see the light. For instance, we can't see stars during the day because the light from the sun is greater than that of the star.
In a big city like London there appear to be fewer stars in the sky because the street lights along with atmospheric conditions obstructs the path of the light from stars, however, if you climb to a higher altitude & are away from the bright lights of the city the sky becomes awash with stars as there is less obstruction.
These things lead to the logical conclusion that size matters not. All which matters to see an object is how much light it can get to your eyes.

Re: The Big Pointless Thread
Actually, although minimal, black coloured things do reflect light. But you'll notice, as the light it is reflecting dims the object becomes more difficult to see. If you have a dimmer light in your house you can check this for yourself. Find something which is white & something which is black (Preferably nothing shiny). Put them a slight distance apart but ensure they both receive the same amount of light to reflect, then slowly dim the lights. You'll notice that the darker object becomes more difficult to see before the lighter object does. This is because the lighter object reflects more light than the darker object so the lighter would be easier to see. The same can be achieved with a shiny object versus a dull object.

Re: The Big Pointless Thread
Basically, yeah. Our eyes react to light & light is essential if we are to see.

Shakespeare's sonnets are 154 poems in sonnet form written by William Shakespeare that deal with such themes as the passage of time, love, beauty and mortality. All but two of the poems were first published in a 1609 quarto entitled SHAKE-SPEARES SONNETS.: Never before imprinted. Sonnets 138 and 144 had previously been published in a 1599 miscellany entitled The Passionate Pilgrim. The quarto ends with "A Lover's Complaint", a narrative poem of 47 seven-line stanzas written in rhyme royal.
