I have seen it 4 times and have loved it each time. It's dances with wolves but with better effects!! I know the critics panned it but I honestly don't know why, maybe my standards are much lower than most

What to you want from a movie?
Love story?
A few fights?
A few battles?
A triumph of good over evil?
A believable star?
A nasty villan?
A montage that makes the star learn everything?
New and scary animals?
Magic?
Mystery?
Joy?
A man's journey from lost and alone to at one ment?
Amazing effects?
Tactics?
Conflict?
Seriously, add something to the list and I'll bet Avatar has it
Re: Has anyone seen Avatar?

Re: Has anyone seen Avatar?
lol
Come on though...IT BLOODY IS!
The only difference I can see is that they've replaced the heavyweight actors with CGI!
If I wanted to watch CGI I'd play a computer game!

Heavyweight??? They all died at the end of the Last Samurai but Avatar ends with hope and possibility.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
You missed the point of The Last Samurai completely!
The Samurai in the film are also a metaphor for the way in which times and attitudes can change so dramatically, irreversibly AND unexpectedly. Their death at the end of the film at the hands of the new improved machine gun represents the death of a totally different previous way of life. Never again will Samurai be feared in the same way and never again will the King be able to call upon the might of the Samurai to defy Parliament. The way in which the King is depicted throughout the film reinforces this idea as he is portrayed as a young boy constantly being manipulated by his politicians who scheme to remove the only obstacle (the Samurai) standing between them and taking total power.
The scene in which the Samurai on horseback are all gunned down in a matter of seconds is fantastic because its a complete reversal of the battle at the beginning in which the soldiers are trembling with fear as the Samurai gallop through the forest towards them. Now it takes only a single man to annihilate a fighting force that had been at the pinnacle for centuries. Suddenly the Japanese values that were once held so important to Samurai, like honour and courage, are sacrificed in favour of politicians greed. In other words, the modern Japanese way of life is more concerned with communist advancement through intimidation than the developing enlightenment of it's society.
Look at the main character itself. Tom Cruise plays a good for nothing drunk soldier with no morals or values whatsoever. He walks the path of the Samurai after being captured by them and achieves a level of greater appreciation of the world around him. The Samurai go from being the monsters depicted at the beginning to being caring gentle warriors at the end.
It is not the Samurai therefore who die at the end but the soul of Japan itself!
Then of course you have the wonderful screenplay. Who needs CGI when our planet is already so beautiful? Again...this beauty is deliberately associated by the Director to the Samurai. We never see the shots of the beautiful countryside before Tom Cruise gets captured.
I suppose you can probably tell how much I love that film! lol
PS. And yes...I did say heavyweight actors! I'd rather watch Cruise and Chow Yun Fat over a bunch of pixels any day!! lol
