Somali Pirates
Paul, 60, and Rachel Chandler, 56, from Kent, were seized from their yacht off the Seychelles in October 2009 and have just been released after 1/4 of a million was paid by their family for their release.
Our government refused to help out, said that paying would just condone the behaviour, I think I agree there, but would you feel the same if that was your family being held?

Re: Somali Pirates
I totally agree that it would just condone the behaviour & probably make it more dangerous for all Brits travelling abroad. Had our government paid for these 2 to be released then you could be pretty sure that at the top of every kidnappers wish list would be "One or more British!"
I'd still feel exactly the same if it was a member of my family. Though I'd want my family member back, the government paying their ransom would only put the rest of my family (and other families) in even greater danger when travelling abroad.
Anyway, if it was my family they'd not even bother calling me to pay a ransom. They know I'm broke and they know I'm really bad with money & saving.....

Re: Somali Pirates
So do you think the government should have prevented the family paying the ransom?
Re: Somali Pirates
Not at all. I think the government did pretty much the only thing they could.
Families sometimes pay ransoms & sometimes don't. It's a risk the kidnappers take and they know that not all families will pay a ransom no matter where they are from.
Governments don't pay ransoms, period. As that's the case there is no point targeting specific people based purely on which government they are covered by.
The family paying the ransom won't change the mindset of kidnappers, so let them pay if they want to & can

Re: Somali Pirates
But surely that group of pirates is now going to go take another hostage, how has that helped anyone? Surely that family has now just made the worlds oceans a lot more dangerous.
Did you know that there are currently 500 people being held to ransom by Somali Pirates??

Re: Somali Pirates
But that group of pirates would've more than likely taken another hostage whether they got the ransom or not, so nothing has changed. They're still grabbing people by chance with just the "Hope" that they'll get the requested ransom rather than the knowledge that the government "Will" pay it......
500 people! Well, not really that surprising. I'm sure there are at least that many being held hostage in South America somewhere. But to say they had 502 & have only been paid for 2 shows that they're playing a game of chance.......

Re: Somali Pirates
I guess the real question should be what are the Somali government doing about it? If anyone has a responsibility to solve this situation it must lie with them.

Well, £500,000 seems to be worth 2 so I'd say £250,000 = 1
