Don't bother. What a let down. Pile of shit.

Too many cut scenes, too much boring driving about, not enough action. What's the point of having a sandbox game that doesn't give you any freedom to bloody explore?!

Noooooooooooooo! I had such high hopes for it. Do you get to the sandbox if you stick it out?

Hello mate :)

Let me try to explain a little more.

The city is huge and wonderfully rendered. Technically the game is a marvel. You really do feel like you're walking and driving through 1940's and 1950's Chicago as Frank Sinatra and Frankie Lymon blare from the car radio. But then it all goes horribly wrong...

Instead of having missions and leaving you to complete them as you see fit like any ordinary sandbox game you instead have stages which each span one day in the overall story. Every stage then has about 20 minutes of cut scenes which, instead of adding to the experience, almost seem to do the opposite. The developers have tried to make the game almost like an interactive movie instead of just a game but the problem with this is that it IS just a game. If it's gangster movies you want why not just watch Goodfellas or the Godfather? The whole point of a game is to imagine you are IN the movie rather than just a mere spectator. By continually breaking up the action to pause as some animated actor tries to do his best Sonny Corleone impression the player is left, for want of a better expression, bored shitless.

In each stage you have a very clear objective and there is little room, or need, for exploration. There are no side missions in this game. No little fun diversions that can swallow up hours like in games such as GTA. You can buy clothes to change your appearance but even this has been halfheartedly done. You have a choice of a leather jacket, a suit in white, the very same suit suit in blue, and the very same suit in brown...

If you manage to stay awake through the cut scenes you're then expected to drive to the destination where all the action for that stage takes place. The variety of transport is very limited and most cars look and perform the same with the only real differences being colour. However, irritatingly, the police force in this game seem to be straight out of J Edgar Hoover's academy and should you dare to overstep the speed limit by even 1 mph, or inadvertently hit another car and drive off, they are all over you, smashing into you and sending you into walls and pedestrians who scream as you mow them down, before, eventually, you stop and get out and the policeman then gives you a ticket and tells you not to do it again lol The only way to avoid this is to activate the cars speed limiter to make sure you don't drive too fast and to obey all the traffic laws such as stopping at red lights etc. This turns a 5 min dash across town into a 15 minute chore which soon becomes very very very tedious.

If you're really lucky you might get to fire a gun on a particular stage. In fairness the combat is done fairly well and uses a cover system similar to GOW but that's that's where the similarity definitely ends. You'll dive, dodge and duck behind a crate and then fire off one or two rounds from your pea shooter before it's all over.

I respect the fact the developers have made an effort not to release just another GTA clone, but, in doing so, they've managed to remove any fun.

Worth a rent over a weekend to get the gist of the game and to satisfy yourself that you've played it but worth forty quid of your hard earned moolah? Now that's an offer this mafioso defintely CAN refuse.

Nobody more disappointed then me tbh!

Let me give you an example of one of the stages:

You wake up. Cue 5 min cut scene.

You get dressed (this invloves walking to your wardobe, which, bizarrely, is located by your front door and not in the bedroom). You walk down stairs to your friend.

Cue 5 min cut scene.

You drive to a cathouse..

Cue 5 min cutscene of your friend getting a BJ in the club.

You leave and then get in the car again.

Cue 2 min cutscene as you hear a thump from the boot a la Goodfellas.

You drive to a field to dump a body which is in the boot of your car. Don't get excited, you didn't actually put the body there or enjoy the fun of killing the guy)

Cue 5 min cutscene as you watch your animated pals bury the body.

You drive home.

End of stage.

Whoop de bloody do..
