Re: Derby County FC.......

Post by Bones on 15th April 2010, 9:48 am

Laughing "The Prem" is a short way of saying "The Premier League" which is the top tier of English League football. An English Football "Season" runs from August - May & there are 4 tiers of professional football leagues in England. In order they are:

The Barclays Premier League (1st / Top tier. Here you'll find teams such as Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Everton, Blackburn etc) Total of 20 teams
The Coca Cola Football League Championship (2nd Tier where Derby play & are currently 16th) Total of 24 teams
Coca Cola Football League One (3rd Tier) Total of 24 teams
Coca Cola Football League Two (4th / Bottom Tier) Total of 24 teams

These used to be simply named Division 1, 2, 3 & 4, but that all began to change in the early 90's. To cut a long story short, In 1992 "Division 1" was rebranded "The FA Premier League". "Division 2" became known as "Division 1". Division 3 became known as Division 2 & Division 4 became known as Division 3.
"The FA Premier League" was sponsored by Carling the following year (1993) and as such it became known as "The FA Carling Premiership". Then it was sponsored by Barclaycard (2001) so became known as "The Barclaycard Premiership". Now it's sponsored by Barclays, hence it being called "The Barclays Premier League".

The remaining 3 divisions of the English Football League system were sponsored by Endsleigh Insurance in 1993 so collectively they were called the Endsleigh League. Then Nationwide took over sponsorship in 1996 (I think) to become known as "The Nationwide Football League". In 2004 the names Division 1, Division 2 & Division 3 were scrapped and renamed:
Division 1 Became The Football League Championship
Division 2 Became The Football League One
Division 3 Became The Football League Two
And as Coca Cola took over sponsorship from Nationwide at this time they became known as "The Coca Cola Football League". Next season (Which starts in August 2010) Coca Cola will be replaced as sponsors of the Football League by "NPower".

Derby are outside of the Premiership due to relegation in 2008. Relegation from the Premiership happens when a team finishes the season in any one of the lowest three positions (18th, 19th or 20th place). When a team is relegated from the Premier League they start the following season in "The Football League Championship".
Teams can be Promoted from "The Football League Championship" and into the "Premiership" by finishing the season in any one of the top 2 places (1st or 2nd, known as Automatic Promotion) or by winning the "Playoffs" which are a two legged (1 match at home & 1 match away) "knock-out" game contested by teams who finished 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th in the Championship. It looks a little something like this:
3rd vs 5th - 5th vs 3rd
4th vs 6th - 6th vs 4th

Which ever teams win their respective games then take on each other at a Wembley showpiece. So if 6th beat 4th & 3rd beat 5th, 3rd & 6th will play one game at Wembley. Whichever team wins the game at Wembley is then promoted to the "Premiership" for the following season.
Relegation from The Football Championship happens in the same way as from the Premiership. If a team finishes in any one of the bottom 3 places in the Championship (22nd, 23rd or 24th) they will play the next season in "League One".

Relegation from the Football League altogether is possible if any teams finishes in one of the bottom 2 places in League Two (23rd or 24th). If this happens they are relegated to "Non-League" Football. The top tier of Non League Football in England is currently called the "Blue Square Premier"........

Does that answer your question? LP Laughing

Re: Derby County FC.......

Post by Bones on 15th April 2010, 2:15 pm

Errrr..... scratch Well........ Yes & no.

Each team plays every other team in their respective Division. So, Derby has to play the other 23 teams in The Championship twice. Once at "Home" (Pride Park) & Once "Away" (Whatever the other teams Home ground is called).
If Derby Win the game they get 3 points. cheers
If they Draw the game they get 1 point. Very Happy
If they lose the game they get no points. Sad
The amount of points Derby has determines their place in the League at any moment during the season. At the moment, from the 24 teams in the Championship, 15 have more points than Derby, but the other 8 have less points, so Derby are in 16th place. If they win their next game & get 3 points then they could move up a place to 15th or higher, but only if the team currently in 15th lose their game & only have 2 points more than Derby.

At the end of the season the amount of points any team has will detrmine where they finish. The team with the most points after playing all their 46 Games (2 games vs 23 teams) would finish 1st (Currently Newcastle United). The team with the least points finish 24th (Currently Peterborough) and so on throughout the rest of the League.

If 2 teams have the same amount of points then thier place is determined by their "Goal Difference". Goal Difference is the figure you get when you subtract the number of goals a team has conceded from the number of goals a team has scored.
So, Derby have scored 49 Goals so far this season in the league, but have conceded 60 goals. So the sum would be 49 - 60 = -11. So Derby have a Goal Difference of Minus 11. Coventry City have the same amount of Points as Derby, but they have scored 45 goals this season & conceded 58. this gives them a goal difference of -13 so they are 1 place below Derby.

So, yes, where they finish the season detremines where they will start the next season. LP

I don't think thats good because the ones at the bottom don't stand much of a chance
do they? Shocked Or have I got it wrong.

You know, I think if more people spent time to explain things (like you have) more people
would take interest. You've took all that time to get me to understand... not sure if I would
take notice or not. I think thats lovely NR. Thank you Peck

Re: Derby County FC.......

Post by Bones on 15th April 2010, 2:42 pm

Well, it depends on how you look at it. At present the bottom 3 teams look a little something like this:

22nd - Sheffield Wednesday - 45 points
23rd - Plymouth - 41 points
24th - Peterborough - 31 points

The three teams above them are:

19th - Watford - 48 Points
20th - Scunthorpe - 47 Points
21st - Crystal Palace - 46 Points

There are only three games left until the end of the season, so there are a maximum of 9 points left to play for (3 points per win x 3 = 9). Peterborough have no chance of avoiding relegation as the can only finish with a maximum of 40 points. Plymouth can finish with a maximum 50 Points & Sheffield Wednesday can finish with a maximum of 54 points. If Plymouth & Sheffiled Wednesday win all 3 of their remaining games & Watford, Scunthorpe & Crystal Palace lose their remaining 3 games then the bottom of the table would look like this:

19th - Sheffield Wednesday - 54 Points
20th - Plymouth - 50 points
21st - Watford - 48 Points
22nd - Scunthorpe - 47 Points (Relegated)
23rd - Crystal Palace - 46 Points (Relegated)
24th - Peterborough - 31 Points (Relegated)

So at this stage of the season it gets very exciting & nervy as every point is vital if you want to avoid relegation or earn promotion.

I like explaining things Very Happy I've always thought that people have a better chance of liking something if they at least have some knowledge about it. Peck
