Rehabilitation for criminals Empty Rehabilitation for criminals

After a discussion with Yellowteddybear I thought this needed exploring a bit further so what are your thoughts on rehabilitating criminals and releasing them into society? Can it really work? Can it work for all offenders? Should we be moving towards an understanding and nurturing society? Should we say that if you break the law you face the consequences, end of?

I'm interested to here your thoughts.

Rehabilitation for criminals Empty Re: Rehabilitation for criminals

Interesting point there Jill, "most will grow up"

This conversation was sparked by the Jon Venebles story, he was 10 years old when he tortured and killed a 2 year old boy with his mate. Please don't misunderstand me here, I have no sympathy for those killers but can any of us genuinely say we are the same person now as we were when we were 10 years old? Granted they committed a brutal, viscous and sick crime that robbed a family of joy for the rest of their lives, they scared this boy to his wits end then killed him and ran away. But as they were so young when they did it shouldn't it be feasible that with the right guidance they could learn to understand the magnitude of the crime they committed and perhaps be saved from a life of hatred and violence?

They were children themselves when they did this but everyone seems willing to right them off as pure evil rather than a product of the shitty upbringing they must have endured. They took Jamie and exerted their power and dominance over him because that was the only way they could regain control of the pointless misery their lives had become. Their parents pushed them to becoming killers by failing to realise that these children needed love and attention, does that really make them pure evil or are they just victims of a life they couldn't escape? Can we really say that these children couldn't be rehabilitated just because we are all sickened by the crime the committed?

Now hang on a minute. We are ALL products of our upbringing & the environment in which we've grown. No exceptions. Everything you think, feel, everything about each of us is because of where we've come from & what we've been through. The difference is that people react differently to things. One child will suffer abuse at the hands of their parents & grow up to be meek, quiet & lacking in confidence.
Another child could suffer the same abuse at the hands of t he same parents but grow to be headstrong, Loud & full of confidence.
Another still could go through all the same but grow to be hateful & resentful......

The "blame" for the way we all are whether good or bad does go back to our experiences & upbringing. You can't get away from that fact unfortunately...... Otherwise what you're saying is we are all either born pure good, born pure evil or born with a bit of both. Now if that's the case then people are blameless really, it’s not my fault I was born a man after all, so how could it be the fault of a murderer if they were born a murderer?? How can you blame someone for being pure evil if they were born Pure Evil??

Yes, people should shoulder responsibility for what they have done, but no matter what the crime, there are not many people in prison who pleaded guilty. A man will cheat on his wife & lie through his back teeth until unquestionable proof is presented, like video footage of him at it and even then he'll probably say "It wasn't me". It's Human nature to try to get away with what we've done, right or wrong, or pass the buck so it's not all our own fault. I guarantee that Venables could not tell you why he did what he did as a 10 yea old, he could only give you theories & one of those would undoubtedly go back to his childhood which we are all products of.......

Every criminal knows what they are doing & knows the impact their actions have on their victims. Burglars know that not only are people gonna be sad that their possessions have been stolen, they will feel violated at the intrusion into what is supposed to be their safe haven & that is far worse than the possessions which have been lost. The thing with most criminals is that for one reason or another, they just don't care. Never confuse that with being oblivious to the consequences of ones actions.

Crimes of passion are no different. Found out your wife’s cheating so you shot her & her lover in the head. I've been cheated on, caught her red handed legs splayed and everything. I joined in to make it a threesome, then never saw her again......... But then I was brought up to make the best of a bad situation & to consider my actions before I act.......

"how can anyone even a ten year old boy make someone smaller than them cry and beg and plead and not feel anything?"

Seriously?? Adults do this everyday & children do it all the time too. No-one picks on someone bigger & stronger than them. Hunters don't go out to catch their prey with just their bare hands & a loin cloth. They give themselves a superior advantage over their prey. Bullying in schools is a rite of passage & the bullies don't go for the 6'2 14st kid unless they are 6'7 & 18st......

We are all different and whatever you think & feel it's a sure fire bet that someone out there thinks & feels exactly the opposite to you. This is Human nature, the way of the world. The strong survive & the weak hope that the strong like them enough to help them survive. If the law abiding people of this world are the strong and the criminals are the weak, then the strong must help the weak to become strong, we must help our fellow man.

Also keep in mind that you cannot have one without the other. You can't have good people unless you have evil people, we must take the rough with the smooth, good times with bad times, there are no rich people unless there are poor people. It's all a fine balancing act.

No matter the crime, everyone can be "Rehabilitated", just not in the same way. But then what use is freedom if you are brainwashed into thinking like the masses?? Are you really free if you are told what to think & how to act? Rehabilitation is just another way to take away someone’s individuality and make them the same as "normal people", but no-one is "normal" & if such a person does exist then maybe they are the ones who require rehabilitating.

I think everyone should have the chance to be "Rehabilitated", but that we should all remember that as we are all different we will require different methods. Everyone deserves a second chance.........

"if your parents hit you and you know it hurts then you know its going to hurt the next person and if you then proceed to hit the next person you cant blame your parents for that "

Of course you can. Children are smarter than they are given credit for. They think, My parent hit me to control me, I want to control that person so hitting them is the way to do it....
Or, I made my parent angry & their reaction was to hit me. That person makes me angry so I'll hit them.
Or even, my parent hits me when they're in a bad mood. I'm in a bad mood so I'm going to hit someone.
Or better still. my parent hit's me for no reason at all, so I'm gonna find someone to hit...... Just for the sheer hell of it.....

You see someone burn themselves by putting their hand in the fire. Some people will think "It hurt them so it will hurt me. I ain’t doing it" other people think "It might've hurt them, but I'm not them..... I'll try it myself...." As humans we rarely learn form the mistakes of others, but are quick to take on the bad habits of others & evolve them to suit us.......

To be honest a lot of what we take on as children comes from the age period of between 0-5, and what we have learned stays with us on a near subconscious level. For instance, some parents will run to their child & soothe them anytime they start to cry, these people generally grow up to be rather needy & attention seeking.
Other parents leave their child to soothe themselves, these people generally grow to be fiercely independent & self sufficient......

I doubt those boys parents showed them how to torture & kill a little boy, but maybe the odd pulling wings off flies, or magnifying glass on the ant hill thing wasn't enough for these boys. Maybe they were allowed to see things they shouldn't see & can't quite understand & wanted to try it themselves because it looked cool. Maybe they just wanted to know how it would feel to do that to someone..... Maybe they were just born evil….. Maybe they have mental health issues….. Maybe they just couldn’t control that desire to kill which every human possess……

The truth is, we’ll never know the real reasons behind it & all anyone can do is offer theories……..

Either way, person A & Person B are looked on as exactly that with rehabilitation, different, but not different enough because to do that takes time, caring, compassion, understanding and most importantly, trust, on both sides. Criminals tend not to trust anyone & most people tend not to trust criminals so we get a vicious circle because the criminal won't trust you until they feel you trust them & most people will never trust a criminal so it seems a catch 22 situation......

No system always works. There's no way that it can, but is it fair to punish those who it might work for because of those who it won't or didn't work for?
