Next up? Drinkers.......

Post by Bones on 8th January 2010, 2:26 pm

Well, now they are looking at ways in which to reduce the "drinking problem" we have in the UK.

"The U.K. government should introduce minimum prices on alcoholic drinks as well as mandatory health warnings on labels and higher taxes to curb drunkenness" a panel of lawmakers said.

"A minimum price per unit of alcohol could bring down consumption and reduce the number of people whose deaths are linked to drinking, estimated at up to 40,000 a year." the committee said. A minimum price of 50p a unit would save an estimated 3,000 lives each year, said the panel, whose members come from all three of the main political parties.

Violent crime fuelled by drink costs the U.K. £12 billion a year, the Home Office estimates. Alcohol consumption has risen 40 percent in England since 1970 to the equivalent of 120 bottles of wine a year, according to the nation’s chief medical officer.

To me, this sounds similar to the start of the battle against smokers.....

What do you think? Do we have a problem here in the UK with alcohol? And do you think the above would help the situation? Or would it only affect those who can barely afford that hard earned drink at the end of a hard week?

I'm a man under 30 who rarely gets drunk, especially not in public. Yet I should have to pay more for alcohol than the old alcoholics all around the country who blight our landscape? That's bit unfair. They're over 30 & seriously abusing alcohol, yet me, as a responsible drinker under 30 should pay more...? scratch

What about the clubs & pubs who put on happy hour & student nights where drinks can cost as little as £1 a go? Why is it that the supermarkets are the ones to shoulder the blame with you?

Some people pre load with "Cheap Booze" from the supermarket. I myself have done this & once I'm pre loaded I've never had more than 2 drinks whilst I'm out. The "Pre load" is to ensure you don't have to spend a bucket load of money whilst you are out. Ever tried going out to a club in the West End? 3 drinks (Single shot + mixer) = £27........ Shocked I could get a whole bottle of whatever I like for less than that..... It's common sense. And if it's "Student Night" or "Happy Hour" there's no need to bother with the pre load......

The "age related pricing system" sounds good in theory, but in reality it wouldn't be very fair. A 21 year old or even a 19 year old solider returning from a tour of duty would have to pay more for a drink? I'm not sure how that's very fair either.....

Also, Did you know that most alcoholics are in the over 30 age bracket? Why should the "young uns" have to pay for the elders who should know better?

Yes, alcohol is a massive killer & is not "On par with cancer caused by smoking", it kills far more than that.....

I like a good piss up and any further increases will only effect those with less money. It won't affect the likes of these yobs:

Rolling Eyes Laughing Ty, you think smoking is worse, I know drinking is worse, but, I'm not gonna get into this Smoking vs Drinking thing with you again. I made a promise to myself Laughing

So, that aside, what do you think of the plans to reduce binge drinking & alcoholism? Do you think there is a better way than what is on the table?

Peck I loves ya really! Laughing

I only compared the two because the actions being taken are strikingly similar. First, Up the prices. Then up the taxes. Next will be no drinking in Public (Already in force in many town centres & on London Public Transport)..... Same actions, different enemy.....

Maybe we should start a Drinking Vs Smoking thread........ See what the masses think..... Wink

I think the masses would probably leave us to it NR and we might just have said it all Suspect

I'm giving thought to methods of consumption reduction....

I agree with that in many ways. I remember when I was growing up, alcohol was never a "Taboo" in my house. We were regularly allowed to have a small drink if we felt like it & the drinks cabinet was never locked. Brandy & Rum became my drinks of choice (and still are today), but I was always taught to take my time with any drink I had.

I firmly believe that this course of action by my parents allowed me to quickly become a responsible drinker & not to go "overboard" with my drinking during my teenage years and into my adult years. In fact, I can think of only a handful of times when I have been past my limit and become drunk & can honestly say that on each occasion it had been the plan & I was with people who I could trust, the most memorable time being with my father.

Maybe other parents should follow suit. As my mother always said, a tree is easier to mould when it is young.....

Tytonidae wrote:All excesses cause problems. Humans are the authors of their own demise often but consuming alcohol and smoking can not be compared. Drinking too much, is essentially a private hell, whereas smoking is an all pervasive, all consuming, all involving horror and has no upside;even a minor smoking habit ruins lives.
Perhaps alcohol related problems kill more because proportionally more folk drink..

I do not believe in any age related price controlling, I can't see how that is justifiable and I do not see why the country should be run to suit people who can't control themselves!

I don't agree with you there Ty as you only have to look at the violence both in the home and outside the home that is often caused by excessive drinking or the deaths on the roads from drunk drivers - smokers do not get violent or crash their cars because of the effects of nicotine.

I personally do not believe all the tales about passive smoking as I think they are a red herring to deflect what is really causing so many of the respitory illnesses that people suffer from today - exhaust fumes. I fail to see how my smoking can ruin anyone's life except for my own.
