To Ban, Or not to Ban Empty To Ban, Or not to Ban

I saw this on the news this morning and couldn't quite believe what I was hearing...

Apparently, The UKIP (UK Independence Party) are unveiling a policy to ban the Muslim Burka (The cloak which covers some Muslim women from head to toe) & Niqab (Veil covering the head and/or face).
It’s said that these go against British Values:

(*) Justifying the policy, Lord Pearson of Rannoch, the leader of UKIP said that, "It makes sense to ban the burka — or anything which conceals a woman’s face — in public buildings. But we want to make it possible to ban them in private buildings. It isn’t right that you can’t see someone's face in an airport.” It was also said that the burqa is oppressive to women's rights, not an issue that UKIP have been associated with. Pearson said "We are not Muslim bashing, but this is incompatible with Britain’s values of freedom and democracy.” (*)

In My opinion, even if this is used to “oppress” women of the Muslim faith, isn’t an outright ban just as oppressive? Although I fully understand the security issue with airports, Banks, etc, telling people what they can & can’t wear is surely also going against British values. I would back a move to have the veil covering the face removed when in places such as Banks & airports (As I'm sure any person living on in this country would), but an outright ban seems to me to be a step too far.

What are your views?

I hear arguments put forward on the lines of not being able to relate to these women because their face is covered and that they are deliberately segregating themselves;I don't need to see a persons face to have a conversation with them Wink and apart from real security issues, I wouldn't ban the covering in this country, or anywhere else.

...I do however have grave concerns over the truly free choice of these women and smell male dominance..

I understand that final concern. Whilst I don't agree or disagree, is that sort of male dominance any different to a man telling his wife that she cannot wear a short skirt or low cut top and her agreeing to do so?

In general, I do have to wonder what the "fear" is with this kind of dress amongst some from the supposedly free, fair & equal western world....... thinking

If on holiday, it's different but wherever you live, you should live by their
rules. It's the same in all other countries so why not in this one? And if you
don't agree with how people live then your in the wrong country. IMO

Don't all attack at once please Angel/Devil

I'm sure you won't be under attack Angel Peck

But, as a British person born & bred in this country, I do have the right and freedom to wear whatever I want to wear. If I want to cover myself from top to toe I feel that in a free country I should be able to do so........ In Britain, I always have been able to do so LP
