Shine you can have narrative poems .... poetry can tell a story ... most famous narrative poem i know is The Charge of the Light Brigade .... by Tennyson ....

my own poem .... Friends are Forever tells you a story of two boys .... i would think that is a narrative poem ....

That's right, Bravo, and your memory of the Rolf Harris is narrative. Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner is narrative. Narrative, in my opinion, is best.

Another Name, Rank and Number.........

Today more teardrops fell on winter ground
While the bugles sang their mournful sound
Laid to rest a young man in a soldier’s grave
A folded Union Jack for someone to save
In a foreign land so very far from his home
When a bomb went off he died all alone
Sacrificed and died in valour standing proud
The vicar tells the heart broken crowd
Cold granite now etched with name and rank
The mother and father minds a painful blank
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust we hear him say
Why is it always the young who have to pay…

Have you ever tried to write to narrative/plot and then inculcate your 'memories' within them?

Return to Northern Ireland.......

Another tour, another bloody tour across the water
Remembering sights of wanton slaughter
Army and Police in a mixed patrol
The vehicle checkpoints and crowd control

The spitting, the shouting, the abusive calls
The sniper, the shot a comrade falls
A barrage of bricks, the catapulted stones
Torn bleeding flesh, and splintered bones

Beatings, kickings, kneecapping and killing
Soldiers blown to pieces at Enniskillen
The young, the old, the meek and mild
No remorse shown for man or child

More sectarian murders ready to greet
Bullet scars on buildings down Leeson Street
Unmoved bodies in a bullet-ridden car
Booby-trapped hedges across South Armagh

Cursing and swearing from mouthy kids
Petrol bombs thrown at armoured pigs
Searching eyes look out from Divis Flats
Machine guns poke below bullet-proof slats

Time to leave again but I`m not alone
Heading for Belfast, Derry or County Tyrone
Seeing the sights of wanton slaughter

To another bloody tour across the water

No Shine, can`t say i have .. i tend to think about a situation that has happened in my lifetime then put pen to paper .... also i have got to be in the mood to write .... i just can`t sit down and think ... right its time for a poem ... i will be mulling something over in my mind for months then when its all fitted together like a jigsaw thats the time ... to sit down and put it on paper ... yes i say paper ... not computer ... i like to look at my work in my own hand ... it feels more warmly than in type ...

Brothers in Arms
(written by Mark Knopfler)

These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day you`ll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you`ll no longer burn
To be brothers in arms

Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
I`ve watched all your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms

Theres so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones

Now the suns gone to hell
And the moons riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But its written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
Were fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

Soldiers Eyes………

To look into a soldier's eyes, the window to their soul.
Look out from inside their mind and see horrors never told.
You say we are just killers, it's not that plain you see.
Take a walk inside my boots and see what I have seen.
Many innocent lives taken and soldiers, they were some.
Giving their life freely to get the mission done.
The last cold stare of death, we see in our mates eyes.
They fought for all your freedom, this is why we die.
Some wonder why we fight to protect this nation and maybe lose our life.
Ask this question to a soldier, the answers in their eyes.
Always will we be here waiting, the call we won't deny.
We'll always fight for freedom, never asking why.
We'll go away to far off lands , leaving our loved ones behind.
Many times we die alone, several times inside.
Open windows to our soul, see the tears we hide.
Secrets that we cannot keep are in a soldier's eyes

Soldiers Eyes 2…

When you look into a soldiers eyes
you see the images locked deep inside
the torture and hate he has seen
the deaths of friends that have been
the hard decisions he has made
the killing blast of one grenade
the countless men he has killed
the dangerous missions he has fulfilled
the horrific gore
the madness of war
the deaths of the innocent, their piercing scream
now you too wont be able to dream
that steely eyed soldier was just a boy
until war took all his joy.
so when you meet a soldier with distant eyes
think of what he has seen and why he wears that disguise

Stay with me Lord, the night is dark
The night is cold, my little spark
of courage dims, the night is long
Be with me Lord, and make me strong.

I love a game, I love a fight
I hate the dark, I love the light
I love my child, I love my wife
I am no coward, I just love life.

Life with its change of mood and shade
I want to live, I'm not afraid
But me and mine are hard to part
Oh unknown God, lift up my heart.

You stilled the waters at Dunkirk
and saved your servants, all your work
is wonderful dear God, You strode
before us down that dreadful road.

We were alone, and hope had fled
We loved our Country, and our dead
and could not shame them, so we stayed
the course, and were not much afraid.

Dear God that nightmare road, and then
that sea, we got there, we were men
My eyes were blind, my feet were torn
My soul sang like a bird at dawn.

I know that death is but a door
I know what we were fighting for
Peace for the kids, our brothers freed
A kinder World, a cleaner breed.

I'm but the son my Mother bore
A simple man, and nothing more
But, God of strength and gentleness
be pleased to make me nothing less.

Help me again when death is near
to mock the haggard face of fear
That when I fall, if fall I must
My soul will crumble in the dust.

Dedicated to the two brave soldiers who were killed in Afghanistan today ... RIP ...
My sincere condolences to their families at this sad time .....

Footprints in the Sand……

One night a man had a dream.
He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand:
one belonged to him, the other to the Lord.
When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.
This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it.
“Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you`d walk with me all the way. But during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints, I don`t understand why when I needed you most you would leave me”
The Lord replied, “My precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you”…..

The news is spread far and wide
Another comrade has sadly died
A sunset vigil upon the sand
As a soldier leaves this foreign land
We stand alone, and yet as one
In the fading light of a setting sun
We've all gathered to say goodbye
To our fallen comrade who's set to fly
The eulogy's read about their life
Sometimes with words from pals or wife
We all know when the CO's done
What kind of soldier they'd become
The padre then calls us all to pray
The bugler has Last Post to play
The cannon roars and belches flame
We will recall, with pride, their name
A minute's silence stood in place
As tears roll down the hardest face
Deafening silence fills the air
With each of us in personal prayer
Reveille sounds and the parade is done
The hero remembered, forgotten by none
They leave to start the journey back
In a coffin draped in the Union Jack

Cast aside these mortal cares
And through the gates, go bold.
This side the body may not leave
Nor can the spirit hold.

The other, where your light now glows,
Is distant as a breath.
Extinguished candle, light sublime,
Rekindled by cold death.

If you can, save a place within your heart for the tired souls of war and conflict and as you walk away take one last backward glance at the places they can no longer go.
Remember what they have taught you and take their knowledge and wisdom with you so their deaths were not in vain. One day when we all look back and realize what they sacrificed, take a moment to embrace in your heart all those gentle heroes that were left behind on the battlefields fighting for their country. Let them know that you have always loved them even though you may not have.
Forever save a place in your hearts for them.

"Why is it so cold?"
An innocent girl asks
She wouldn't understand
It's what the world masks.

She doesn't know why
Why everyone seems to cry
It's something few understand
Why men must be sent to die.

In a desert far away
Heroes stand strong and tall
Though dirtied with life
The men are brave through it all.

Perhaps this is what is needed
A little discipline and war
To make some people realize
Life won't be like before.

Brave men die far away
Protecting us from harm
A young man looks down
He forgot his good luck charm.

In an instant his life is gone
Torn away from the ground
In the distance a man lies fallen
With his hands and feet bound.

In a world far from war
People cannot see
What these men do
Their heroism and bravery.

So when the girl asks
"Why is it so cold?"
It's because of the men
That we can no longer hold.

The bayonet supports the rifle
sticking out of the ground so proud.
The helmet and id tags rest on top,
the boot's cadence is no longer loud
And the elements were so mixed in him,
that all the world would stand up and say,
This was a man.

Comrades known in marches many,
Comrades, tried in dangers many,
Comrades, bound by memories many,
Brothers let us be.
Wounds or sickness may divide us,
Marching orders may divide us,
But whatever fate betide us,
Brothers of the heart are we.

Comrades, known by faith the clearest,
Tried when death was near and nearest,
Bound we are by ties the dearest,
Brothers evermore to be.
And, if spared, and growing older,
Shoulder still in line with shoulder,
And with hearts no thrill the colder,
Brothers ever we shall be.

By communion of the banner,
Crimson, white, and starry banner,
By the baptism of the banner,
Children of one Church are we.
Creed nor faction can divide us,
Race nor language can divide us
Still, whatever fate betide us,
Children of the flag are we.

I went to see the soldiers, row on row on row,
And wondered about each so still, their badges all on show.
What brought them here, what life before
Was like for each of them?
What made them angry, laugh, or cry,
These soldiers, boys and men.

Some so young, some older still, a bond more close than brothers
These men have earned and shared a love, that's not like any others
They trained as one, they fought as one
They shared their last together
That bond endures, that love is true
And will be, now and ever.

I could not know, how could I guess, what choices each had made,
Of how they came to soldiering, what part each one had played?
But here they are and here they'll stay,
Each one silent and in place,
Their headstones line up row on row
They guard this hallowed space.

I am a Britain
Who will fight to stay free
I am a Soldier
Of the British Army

I will never forget
What My Country Stands For
Stand In Its Defence
In Peacetime Or War

I will Protect My Allies
Their Countries Too
To Defend Their Freedom
As Each One of Us Do

I will Always Respect
My Leader's Advice
I will not Question His Orders
I will Not Think Twice

I will Always Place the Lives
Of My comrades Before Mine
Protect them From The enemy Danger
Be the First To Cross the Line

I will Always Remember
In the Time Of War
The Promises I Made To God and to My Country
To Be A Good Soldier I swore

I will Continue to Believe
In My Country As A Whole
And Though Criticised By Many
Remember I play A Important Role

I become Battered
Or A Broken Man
But I will Keep My Will to Survive
Never forget The Words " I Can"

I will Keep My Courage Everlasting
No Matter The Choices That Face Me
I May Die In The Arms Of War
But I will die For My Country With Honour and Dignity……

A Nation lives forever indebted to your lives
You gave away your spirits, left behind your wives.

When one fell down, another would stand
To die for his country in a foreign land.

Together they fought ‘till the enemy lost
Fought for our freedom, whatever the cost.

I can come and go whenever, wander where I please -
Because of you a nation lives and breathes in ease.

Thank you for my life and freedom, my ability to roam
Because of you I can be proud to call this nation home
